Premature for top-ups but £1 might help
The Think Tank 2020health has published report
‘Our health, our money, our say’ which highlights the
wasted, unused and future monies that should be available to all patients on the NHS.
In it we assert that the top-up consultations are based on a false-premise, i.e. that there
isn’t enough money in the NHS to pay for new medications.
Julia Manning, Director of 2020health said, “It is unacceptable that patients are having to
go to the high court to fight for treatments when millions of pounds of medication is being wasted,
the NHS has a £1.7Bn surplus, and billions more could be saved in the NHS through the prescribing
of generics in the next 4 years.”
“There is also needs to be a realisation of the jeopardy that not adopting new drugs will
engender, both to the economy and to future clinical trials in the UK which will put us at a
disadvantage”.
The reports suggestions to combat waste include a
£1 flat charge for all prescriptions, smaller amounts of initially
prescribed medication and patient-held electronic records.
