A 2020health impact study
Verification and valuation of a new care strategy for Dementia
2020health undertakes a non-randomised control study to test a wellbeing focused, dementia care strategy.
Background
In the UK 700,000 people live with dementia with a cost to the economy £17 billion a year, more than the cost of cancer and heart disease combined. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for up to 70% of all cases and has an incidence of up to 20% in the over 80’s. Many questions arise about how we can reduce antipsychotic usage and the number of interventions needed? and how we can improve dementia patients wellbeing overall?
This treatment offers a different and some say successful way of managing the disease for both the person with dementia and their family. The aim is to promote lifelong well-being for people with dementia. However this treatment has never been the subject of a randomised controlled study and 2020health seeks to undertake such an evaluation. This project is being directed by Contented Dementia author, Oliver James.
Our Thinking
The dementia care technique seems to allow carers to manage the needs and welfare of elderly people with middle or late stage dementia more efficiently and more sympathetically. 2020health aims to verify and valuate these claims by introduing the method into independent UK Carehomes and monitor the impact.
